Today we started our Sensory Garden partnership project with Ellen from the Royal Botanic Gardens. Four Year 3/4 classes will be participating for the next 6 weeks. Today the began by measuring the perimeter for the garden. Everyone took measurements of the 4 sides, then we averaged the measurements to get a more precise estimate. Students also used their different senses to experience a range of plants. They wore blind folds while the felt the plants, they smelled and then looked at and even tasted some of the plants.
In two weeks time, these students will visit the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens to get inspiration for designing our own garden on what is currently hard-packed bare dirt. (By the way, does anyone know someone who might be willing to help us to rotary hoe the area in a few weeks time?)
This is a brilliant real-life learning experience and one that will have ongoing benefits for our whole school community. If anyone would like to learn more or might like to get involved, please let me know.
